Increased Demand for Machining Certificate at LSC-Conroe Center
Industry Demand Causes Increased Interest and Additional Classes

Responding to an increased amount of community interest, Lone Star College-Conroe Center will offer a second series of computerized numerical control (CNC) machining classes during the evening beginning June 22, 2009. These classes will allow students to earn a CNC machining workforce development certificate, preparing them for entry-level employment in this emerging field.
“Machining is a high-demand occupation and an approved Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program,” said Magali Reyes, program manager for manufacturing and applied technology trades at LSC-Conroe Center. “Students trained at LSC-Conroe Center can become employed by large manufacturing plants or smaller machine shops located in the Montgomery County area.”

The CNC machining certificate program consists of five classes - Machine Shop Math, Blueprint Reading for Machinists, Precision Tools and Measurements, Computerized Numeric Control (CNC) Programming, and Professionalism in the Workplace. Classes will meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-10 p.m.

Machinists use tools such as lathes, milling machines, and milling centers to produce precision metal parts. Most machinists work in the machinery manufacturing industry, building oil field equipment, transportation equipment, aerospace parts, and other motor parts. In Texas, machinists can make $15 per hour to start, and up to $32 an hour with experience.

The approximate cost for the certificate program is $1,335, excluding books. Students who believe they may be eligible for tuition or supplies assistance due to a lay-off are encouraged to contact Reyes at (936) 273-6033 or magali.s.reyes@LoneStar.edu, or the Conroe Workforce Solutions office at (936) 441-0037.

For more information about LSC-Conroe Center, call (936) 271-6000, or visit www.lonestar.edu/conroe-center. LSC-Conroe Center is located at 102 Longview Drive, just east of downtown Conroe on Highway 105 past the FM 1314 intersection.

Lone Star College System consists of five colleges, including CyFair, Kingwood, Montgomery, North Harris, and Tomball, six centers and Lone Star College-University Center. With over 51,000 students, it is the largest college system in the Houston area and the third largest community college district in Texas. To learn more, visit www.LoneStar.edu.
