| Community College Choral Festival Returns to Lone Star College-Montgomery |
|
Lone Star College-Montgomery will host for a second year the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Choral Festival on Friday, March 27. Choirs from community colleges throughout the greater Houston area will join together for a full day of rehearsing and music making, culminating in a free, public performance at 7:30 p.m. in the Lone Star College-Montgomery Center for the Arts (Building D theatre). More than 100 singers are expected to participate, creating a massive sound that will fill the hall.

“This is always an exciting program,” said Gregory Ristow, director of choirs at LSC-Montgomery and the festival’s coordinator. “The students love the opportunity to sing with students from other schools and to work with a famous conductor. I’m thrilled to be able to host it for a second year at Lone Star College-Montgomery.”
The concert will be directed by Dr. David Fryling, assistant professor of music and director of choral studies at Hofstra University in New York. At Hofstra, Dr. Fryling conducts the select Hofstra chorale and Hofstra chamber singers, and teaches choral conducting and advanced studies in conducting.
Dr. Fryling is also coordinator of voice studies for the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, serving as conductor and music director of the World Youth Honors Choir and the Festival Choir & Orchestra. These two groups form the core of the high school choral experience at this renowned and intensive six-week arts camp, which attracts over 2,200 high-school aged visual and performing artists from around the world to the woods of northern Michigan every summer to live, learn and perform with an unparalleled group of peers and educators.
The performance features a wide variety of choral music, from an Ave Maria (Hail Mary) by the Renaissance English composer Robert Parsons to a comic, pseudo-Swedish piece by Finnish composer Jaako Mäntyärvi.
“Our students are really enjoying singing this one. If you remember the Swedish chefs from the Muppets, you’ll understand why!” said Ristow. “It will also include music of Felix Mendelssohn, whose 200th centenary is being celebrated around the world by classical musicians.”
“This concert has a little something for everyone,” Dr. Fryling said, “and I can’t wait to work with these talented students.” For more information regarding music performances, contact Denise Meyers, program coordinator, at (936) 273-7021 or Denise.Meyers@LoneStar.edu.
