David Tolbert has recently been added as the keynote luncheon speaker to present “Cambodia: Hope for Justice." “I will discuss in my talk some of the background regarding the Khmer Rouge and the subsequent atrocities, the long and tortured process of establishing the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and its work to date,” said Tolbert.
“I will also review the current situation of the ECCC and what the current situation looks like, with the first trial just having started,” he added.
Tolbert is currently a Jennings Randolph Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace. He previously served as Assistant Secretary-General and Special Expert to the United Nations Secretary-General on United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT).
“We are extremely honored to welcome both Polumbaum and Tolbert as our featured speakers for this year’s conference,” said Nithyanantha Sevanthinathan, director of international programs and services for Lone Star College System. “Their combined knowledge and experience will provide a wonderful insight for our students, faculty and community members,” he said. The conference will also feature a poster contest. Deadline for submissions is March 27. All artwork should reflect the conference theme, be original, submitted digitally, no larger than 24” X 36”, and be of quality suitable for laser printing. “For purposes of blind judging the artist’s name and college must not appear on the image and the artist’s name, college and contact information must be included in an email accompanying the submission,” said Charles Colson, poster contest coordinator. Winners will be awarded $100 for first place; $75 for second place and $50 for third place. Submissions must be emailed as a JPEG attachment to Charles Colson at Lee College, ccolson@lee.edu.
