| IEC Speakers to Include Polumbaum and Tolbert; Poster Contest Deadline Nears |

HOUSTON (March 18, 09) — Lone Star College System and the Gulf Coast International Education Consortium will host the Sixth Annual International Education Conference, Asia: Bridging the New World, April 17 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at Lone Star College-Tomball.

The conference is open to community college students in the region and will focus on international studies, global environment concerns, international education, study abroad and international students. A student poster contest will be incorporated into the festivities.
Dr. Judy Polumbaum, University of Iowa journalism professor, will serve as the keynote speaker. Her presentation is titled “Getting to Know China: The Role of Media in US-China (Mis)Understanding.” Polumbaum’s research focuses on journalism and media in mainland China.
David Tolbert has recently been added as the keynote luncheon speaker to present “Cambodia: Hope for Justice."
“I will discuss in my talk some of the background regarding the Khmer Rouge and the subsequent atrocities, the long and tortured process of establishing the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and its work to date,” said Tolbert.
“I will also review the current situation of the ECCC and what the current situation looks like, with the first trial just having started,” he added.
Tolbert is currently a Jennings Randolph Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace. He previously served as Assistant Secretary-General and Special Expert to the United Nations Secretary-General on United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT).
“We are extremely honored to welcome both Polumbaum and Tolbert as our featured speakers for this year’s conference,” said Nithyanantha Sevanthinathan, director of international programs and services for Lone Star College System.
“Their combined knowledge and experience will provide a wonderful insight for our students, faculty and community members,” he said.
The conference will also feature a poster contest. Deadline for submissions is March 27. All artwork should reflect the conference theme, be original, submitted digitally, no larger than 24” X 36”, and be of quality suitable for laser printing.
“For purposes of blind judging the artist’s name and college must not appear on the image and the artist’s name, college and contact information must be included in an email accompanying the submission,” said Charles Colson, poster contest coordinator.
Winners will be awarded $100 for first place; $75 for second place and $50 for third place.
Submissions must be emailed as a JPEG attachment to Charles Colson at Lee College, ccolson@lee.edu.
The annual conference is hosted by the Lone Star College System and the Gulf Coast International Education Consortium and is open to all faculty, administrators, community leaders, and college and high school students in the Texas Gulf Coast region. The Gulf Coast International Consortium consists of Alvin Community College, Brazosport Community College, Galveston College, Houston Community College, Lee College, Lone Star College System, College of the Mainland, San Jacinto College, and Wharton County Junior College.
