| “Kierkegaard: Father of Existentialism?” is Topic for April 2 Lyceum Series |

The Lone Star College-Montgomery Lyceum Speaker Series welcomes Dr. C. Stephen Evans, professor of philosophy and humanities at Baylor University, who will lecture on “Is Kierkegaard the Father of Existentialism?” on Thursday, April 2, at 6 p.m. in building B, room 102. A “meet and greet” reception with refreshments will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the lobby outside of the lecture hall in building B.

Evans’ lecture will explore the philosophical and theological dimensions of Kierkegaard’s thought. Evans is touted as one of the world’s foremost scholars on Søren Kierkegaard, the prolific 19th century Danish philosopher and theologian, and his most recent published work is Kierkegaard: An Introduction.
Born in Atlanta, Evans received his bachelor’s degree from Wheaton College in 1969 and his Ph.D. from Yale University in philosophy in 1974 as a Danforth Fellow. Prior to coming to Baylor, Evans taught at Wheaton College (1974-84), St. Olaf College (1984-94), where he served as curator of the Howard and Edna Hong Kierkegaard Library as well as being a member of the philosophy department, and at Calvin College (1994-2001), where, besides teaching philosophy, he served three years as dean for research and scholarship. There, he was the inaugural holder of the William Spoelhof Teacher-Scholar Chair, the first endowed chair at Calvin.
His published works include 14 single-authored books as well as five edited volumes. Nine of these books are with university presses or secular, scholarly presses. The remainder are scholarly books for religious publishing houses. His most recent book is Kierkegaard: An Introduction (Cambridge University Press, 2009). Other scholarly books include Kierkegaard’s Ethic of Love: Divine Commands and Moral Obligations (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2004), The Historical Christ and the Jesus of Faith: The Incarnational Narrative as History (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1996), and Passionate Reason: Making Sense of Kierkegaard’s Philosophical Fragments (Bloomington, Indiana: Indiana University Press, 1992). More popular recent works include Why Believe? (Eerdmans) and Pocket Dictionary of Philosophy of Religion and Apologetics (InterVarsity Press).
Evans has published approximately 80 professional articles in refereed journals and university press volumes, as well as numerous articles in more popular periodicals. He has made over 100 professional presentations, including many named, endowed lectureships. He received two Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities ($30,000 each) and a major grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts ($100,000). He is a past president of the Society of Christian Philosophers and the Søren Kierkegaard Society.
The Lyceum Speaker Series at LSC-Montgomery provides a variety of lectures throughout the fall and spring semesters that are based on sociological, historical, economic, political, psychological, and spiritual views.
