Major Elementary Dedication Scheduled for Oct. 19
Houston, TX. Spring ISD will hold a dedication ceremony for Helen Major Elementary School at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19. The school opened in August 2009 at 16855 Sugar Pine Dr. just south of FM 1960 under the leadership of Principal J.C. Harville.
Harville said the school is focusing on “building a community” of Major’s students, staff and parents. With that goal in mind, Harville asked the students themselves to participate in the selection process for the school’s mascot. Their choice, the All Stars, is featured in a mural surrounding a large skylight in the main hallway of the school. The painting includes designs representing different areas of learning where students can achieve and excel.

“We want our kids to be all stars, not just in academics, but in drama, athletics and music also,” Harville said.

The dedication ceremony will feature all-star performances by the students who will not only lead the ceremony but will be singing a selection of songs.

Tours will be offered following the dedication that will give guests the opportunity to see the mural. In addition, the new school features a science lab and incorporates educational technology throughout the building with interactive white boards by SMART Technologies, Inc. and projectors in nearly every classroom. The facility was designed by PBK architects and built by Purcell Construction to accommodate 800 prekindergarten through fifth-grade students.

The school is named after long-time educator Helen Major who began her career in 1973. She taught elementary students in New York and Louisiana prior to coming to Spring ISD in 1979 as a teacher at Anderson Elementary School and later in 1988 as a teacher at Link Elementary. She became the assistant principal at Clark Elementary in 1996 and was named the principal there in January 2000. In January of 2003 Major opened the new Clark Intermediate School as principal where she served till she retired in 2008.

The public is invited to the dedication, which will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony with refreshments following.
