Featured Artists Announced for Via Colori 2009
- Artists combine passion for art and helping children with hearing impairments -
The Center for Hearing and Speech (CHS) recently announced its 2009 Via Colori CHS Featured Artist team of Bryan Higgins and Kenneth Pierson; the El Paso Featured Artist, Melanie Stimmell; and the Quantum Energy Partners Featured Artist, Lysa Ashley.
This is the first year a team was selected instead of an individual for the CHS Featured Artist role.
CHS Featured Artists: Bryan Higgins and Kenneth Pierson
Bryan Higgins (Spring, TX) and Kenneth Pierson (Conroe, TX) are not only talented photorealist artists, but also volunteers at CHS. Bryan always enjoyed art, but did not take his talent seriously until meeting Kenneth at an art show and feeling inspired by his work. The two joined forces to create interconnecting squares for Via Colori.
“Kenneth and Bryan are generous and talented people. It has been very touching to have them volunteer with us,” CHS Development and Outreach Coordinator Katharine Boyette said. “They are a perfect fit to be this year’s CHS Featured Artist team, because they understand that Via Colori is about more than great art and they were moved by our mission and the kids we serve.”
“My perception of kids with hearing impairments changed when I first visited CHS and the advancements the organization has made over the years blew me away,” Higgins said. “It is much more fulfilling when you see how and who you are helping. I am participating this year, and for years to come, to display my art and give my time to help raise money for a great group of kids.
Pierson said: “I participate in Via Colori because art is my passion and CHS does great things, so I am happy to help in any way. I am honored to serve as a featured artist for such a great event.”

El Paso Featured Artist: Melanie Stimmell
A resident of Los Angeles, Melanie Stimmell is an internationally recognized street painter who specializes in Renaissance artistry with a modern vision. She has won several Gold Medals in both Italy and Germany and is the only woman to have won the title of Maestro in Italy. She also teaches art to children and worked on the “South Park” television series for seven years.
“There is richness and depth to her street paintings. She is creative, world-renowned and a joy to work with during the festival,” Boyette said.
“Houston Via Colori is one of my favorite festivals, because of the wonderful sense of community and hospitality,” Stimmell said. “We are so used to seeing art on the walls of our homes, museumsand galleries, but rarely do we have the opportunity to see an artist at work. It makes the art and the artist more accessible to someone who may not otherwise be interested.”

Quantum Energy Featured Artist: Lysa Ashley
Lysa Ashley is an artist and kindergarten teacher from Corona, CA. Her large, striking works of chalk art range in styles, including classic recreations and animal portraiture. She has been chalk painting for 12 years and is largely self-taught.
“Lysa’s incredible work always amazes Via Colori attendees,” Boyette said. “The performance aspect of street painting is exhilarating to Lysa and she really enjoys talking to the festival attendees. We always look forward to seeing what Lysa will surprise us with next.”
