| No I.O.U.s Needed for Admission to “I.O.U.S.A” Documentary |
College to Host Oct. 29 Free Showing of Critically-Acclaimed Film About the U.S. Economy
There will be no “I.O.U.s” required for area residents who want to learn more about the growing, global economic crisis. On Wednesday, October 29, Lone Star College-Montgomery will host a free showing of the award-winning documentary “I.O.U.S.A,” which explores the many facets of the U.S. economy that relate to the ongoing downturn of both the U.S. and global economies.

The 7 p.m. showing in the college’s Mainstage Theatre (Building D) will be followed by a panel discussion and question-answer session with two LSC-Montgomery professors. This critically-acclaimed documentary, which came out earlier this year, addresses the four key deficits in the American economy: budget, savings, trade, and leadership. It also discusses ways to avoid a national economic disaster.
“This is an important event for our community,” said Gary Brown, professor of political science at LSC-Montgomery. “I would encourage anyone to come, watch and learn. The film is an excellent, easy-to-understand examination of the issues facing our nation and the world,” added Brown, who, along with James Zipperer, LSC-Montgomery professor of economics, will discuss aspects of the film after the showing, as well as answer questions from the audience.
“The movie will end up doing most of the talking for us,” noted Brown. “It is pretty sobering stuff.”
Brown thanked the Peter G. Peterson Foundation in New York , which owns the rights to the film, for allowing the college to show it, as well as U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady for supporting the showing of the movie at the college.
According to Walter V. Addiego, a reviewer with the San Francisco Chronicle, “Any documentary about the alarming level of our national debt faces a major hurdle--making the dismal subject at least somewhat palatable. I.O.U.S.A. does about as good a job as any film could be expected to, thanks to the direction of Patrick Creadon.”
LSC-Montgomery is located between Conroe and The Woodlands, at 3200 College Park Drive, one-half mile west of Interstate 45. For more information about the college, call (936) 273-7000, or visit Montgomery.LoneStar.edu.
