Airport Employees Contribute to Ponderosa Food Pantry
Spring, TX. Students and staff involved with the Helping Hands group at Ponderosa Elementary School got a helping hand from the Houston Airport System (HAS) recently when a pick-up truckload of nonperishable food items and backpacks was delivered to the school.
After hearing about the Ponderosa food and clothing pantry that was running low on supplies, HAS and its service organization, the Houston Friendly Committee, sponsored a food drive to collect healthy, nutritional food and new or slightly-used backpacks for the school.

Ponderosa Helping Hands was established after Hurricane Ike and began collecting food and clothing to help families who lost everything due to the storm. “Our area was hard hit during and after Ike,” said Debbie Graham, Ponderosa principal. “The Ponderosa community was without electricity for three to four weeks after Ike and many families lost all their food and some even lost their jobs.”

As the area began to slowly recover from the hurricane and the holiday season was fast approaching it became apparent that many in the community were still in need of food and clothing. The school continued to accept donations during the remainder of the school year and even held garage sales to restock the pantry that had been set up in a portable building behind the school.

Graham said the school decided to continue the Helping Hands project this school year due to the impact of the current economic situation on the community. She said the project has not only helped those who are in need but has also provided an opportunity for students to learn about giving back to their community.

“There is a real need here, and thanks to the generous donations of the Houston Airport System employees there is a way to fill the need,” Graham said.
