| Sarah Barrington Creates Sculpture at Western Art Academy |
|
Spring, TX. Sarah Barrington earned a scholarship to study at the Western Art Academy through the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. As the winner of a special merit recognition in the Klein ISD Rodeo Art Contest, she was eligible to apply for the scholarship.

At the Western Academy of Art, students attended classes in sculpture and oil painting. Sarah had never attempted to work in either medium. Her first sculpture was chosen for bronzing, one of three in her class to be selected. Because Sarah is a perfectionist, the work reflects her desire for realism in her work. Showing movement in the sculpture was a challenge, but Sarah let her sculpture tell a story of a mother and child dancing together and captured the movement of the dance.
Sarah will receive a bronze of her work and the mold that will allow her to make and sell additional copies.
Sarah is an eleventh grade student at Klein High School. In addition to her participation in the Western Art Academy classes this summer, Sarah also attended the Savannah College of Art and Design where she attended figure drawing classes.
Sarah’s interest in art was evident as early as kindergarten when she “fell in love with art” as she painted leaves in autumn colors. Her fond memories include working with Ms. Crystal Smith who was a teacher who gave her freedom to explore her imagination and Ms. Ramona Britt who helped her in the development of art skills.
From entering Livestock Show and Rodeo art competitions, Sarah won a blue ribbon every year she entered until last year when she received the special merit award. She still holds the goal of attaining a blue ribbon award.
She has also entered the Scholastic Art contests. Last year, she won a silver key for a photograph that was the cover photo for Perspectives, the Klein High literary magazine. She donated the photograph to Texas Children’s Hospital where it is on display on the sixteenth floor.
Sarah has begun her own business. She draws antique cars, takes photographs for engagement announcements, paints human and animal portraits, and does pen and ink drawings. She will do sculptures on commission.
At Klein High, she is in the top 10% of her class, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of FCA, Student Council, and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) for which she is the president.
Away from school, Sarah coaches a little girls’ volleyball team, participates in her church’s mission trips, and works at her church’s Family Life Center.
The Klein ISD is located in north Harris County and has more than 43,527 students in its twenty-six (26) elementary, eight (8) intermediate, and four (4) high schools. Visit the district’s Web site at www.kleinisd.net for additional information about the Klein Independent School District.
