| Klein Forest Volunteer Receives State Recognition |
Friends of the Forest: fostering a culture of achievement through example and service
Spring, TX. Ms. Lucy Blome, a volunteer at Klein Forest High School, was recognized by the State Board of Education (SBOE) on September 18, as a Hero for Children. She was selected by Mr. Lawrence Allen Jr. who is the vice chair of the SBOE. As the District 4 board member, he represents about 1.4 million people in the Houston area in the Harris and Fort Bend counties.

Ms. Blome and her husband Bob are among the founding members of the Friends of the Forest, a group of community members who, even though their children are grown, have banded together to make a difference for Klein Forest. Mr. and Mrs. Blome enlist others to become a part of the Friends of the Forest. They host receptions, breakfast meetings, luncheons, parent open house events, and community meetings at Klein Forest. They also attend school events such as games and fine arts programs. And they pass on the good things they observe at Klein Forest.
Mr. Bill Lakin, the principal of Klein Forest High School nominated Ms. Blome as a representative of the Friends of the Forest. In the application, he stated, “Ms. Blome gives more than her assigned job requires when she volunteers. Her smiles tell students that she thinks school is important, that adults think they are important, and that she supports the teachers and staff members of our school.”
After traveling to Austin with assistant principal Ms. Mindy Lindinger and teacher Ms. Lynne Dozier for the recognition program at the SBOE meeting, Mr. Lakin noted, “Having a community receive recognition for the untold amount of work she has put in for the Klein Forest community is super fantastic. Ms. Blome and her husband have helped capture a group of people that lose connection with the schools if it is not nurtured. With their help and the help/support of so many of the Friends of the Forest, our school climate has been enhanced. This effort shows how communities involved in schools can really make a difference.”
The SBOE established the Heroes for Children awards program in 1994 to recognize outstanding service and dedication to helping provide each Texas student with a meaningful and positive learning experience.
The Klein ISD is located in north Harris County and has more than 43,527 students in its twenty-six (26) elementary, eight (8) intermediate, and four (4) high schools. Visit the district’s Web site at www.kleinisd.net for additional information about the Klein Independent School District.
