AAUW and Klein Forest Plan Summit
Spring, TX. The North Harris County Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Klein Forest High School united in preparation for The Summit on October 7 for tenth grade young men and women. The joint project directors are Ms. Susan Muirhead of Klein Forest and Ms. Kati Woodward of the AAUW.
The Summit is offered to encourage sophomore students to make good academic choices while they are in high school so that they have options for college or vocational training beyond high school. Additionally, the participants will be challenged to make wise choices in the area of social relationships.

Former astronaut Dr. Bernard Harris will be the keynote speaker. He holds a degree in biology from the University of Houston. His medical degree is from Texas Tech University School of Medicine. He was the first African-American to walk in space. Dr. Harris is a veteran of two space flights. He is the CEO of Vesalius Ventures, dedicated to funding new technologies to advance the world of telemedicine.

Klein Forest staff members serving on the steering committee are as follows: Mr. Brian Sedlacek, Ms. Marcie Thompson, Ms. Jo Ann Shaw, Ms. Judy Shipes, Ms. Meredith Cook, and Ms. Lynne Dozier.

Members of the AAUW who are leading the project are as follows: Mr. Diane Sharr, Ms. Mary Gubert, Ms. Betsy Calabro, Ms. Jane Egner, Ms. Virginia Lyon, and Ms. Julie Toll.

The Klein Education Foundation provided two grants that supported the first young women’s summit two years ago and the first young men’s summit last year.
